Finding Your Style, Your Way

Finding Your Style, Your Way

A lot of women tell us the same thing when they walk into Twisted Sisters: they know what they don't like. They just can't quite put a finger on what they do.

We get it. With trends changing constantly and new styles showing up every season, figuring out what actually feels like you can feel harder than it should.

But personal style isn't something you're born knowing. It's something you build, piece by piece, usually by trying things on, making a few mistakes, finding a few favorites, and paying attention to how you feel along the way.

Here's how we'd start.

Start With What You Already Wear on Repeat

Open your closet and look for the pieces you reach for without thinking.

Not the dress you bought for that one wedding. Not the jeans you've been meaning to wear. The pieces that are a little worn in because you actually live in them.

Those pieces are already telling you something.

Maybe you keep gravitating toward the same colors. Maybe everything you love is soft and easy rather than structured. Maybe you always feel best in a certain silhouette.

Pay attention to those patterns. That's the beginning of your personal style. You don't have to discover some completely new version of yourself. You might just need to notice what's already there.

Notice What You're Drawn to Before You Try It On

When you're shopping, pay attention to what catches your eye before you start talking yourself out of it.

Maybe it's a color you normally wouldn't wear. Maybe it's a print, shape, or texture that immediately makes you stop. That first reaction is worth paying attention to.

Sometimes we convince ourselves we don't like something because we don't know how we'd wear it. Give yourself permission to be curious before deciding whether something is “you.”

Give Yourself Permission to Repeat

One of the best things about having a personal style is realizing you don't need constant variety.

If a certain silhouette works for you, wear it. If you love a particular color, buy it in more than one piece. If you know you feel great in dresses, there's nothing wrong with having a closet full of them.

The women whose style feels the most put together aren't necessarily wearing something completely different every day. They've figured out what works for them and aren't afraid to repeat it.

Your personal style can have a formula. In fact, finding that formula can make getting dressed a whole lot easier.

Let It Change Slowly

Your style today doesn't have to look exactly like it did five years ago. And it probably won't look exactly the same five years from now.

That's not inconsistency. That's just life. Maybe you're suddenly drawn to color. Maybe you're ready to trade your skinny jeans for a wider leg. Maybe something you used to wear constantly just doesn't feel like you anymore.

You don't have to reinvent your entire wardrobe every time your style changes. Let it happen gradually. Add something new. Let something else go. Keep the pieces that still feel like you.

Use Accessories to Test the Waters

Want to try something outside your usual style without committing to an entirely new wardrobe? Start small.

Accessories are one of the easiest ways to experiment. A bag, a pair of earrings, a scarf, or a bracelet can introduce something new without completely changing the way you dress.

Try:

  • A statement earring with an otherwise simple outfit
  • A bag in a color you wouldn't normally choose
  • Layered bracelets if you're curious about wearing more jewelry
  • A bold shoe with an outfit you already know you love

You might discover a new favorite. Or you might discover that trend isn't for you. Either way, you've learned something.

Ask for a Second Opinion, Then Trust Your Own

Sometimes it helps to have another set of eyes.

A friend who knows your style can tell you when something really feels like you. A good salesperson can help you see a piece in a way you hadn't considered. Someone else might notice a color or silhouette that you would have passed right by.

Take the advice. Try the outfit. But then trust your own reaction. If you put something on and feel like yourself, that's the answer.

Personal style isn't about dressing for everyone else. It's about finding the clothes that make you feel comfortable, confident, and a little more like yourself when you walk out the door.

Come Find Yours With Us

You don't have to walk into Twisted Sisters knowing exactly what your style is.

Sometimes it takes trying on ten things to find the one. Sometimes the piece you weren't sure about ends up being the one you can't stop thinking about. Sometimes you come in looking for one thing and leave with something completely different.

That's part of the fun. We're here to help you try things on, experiment, find your favorites, and figure out what actually feels like you.

Because the goal isn't to have the perfect wardrobe. It's to have a wardrobe that feels like yours.
